Installation of an Art Exhibit in Aarhus Kunsthal
Hired as a techinician by Michala Paludan, I helped transform everyday household appliances into an immersive audio experience. In I AM YOUR BODY, familiar items like refrigerators, washing machines, and microwaves are no longer just silent fixtures. Instead, they become an orchestra of synchronized voices that takes part in a 'Singspiel' which surrounds and engages the listener. The signspiel is composed by Aske Zidore.
Every appliance was modified to house a speaker, making each one part of the installation’s audio network. I opened up each of the seven machines (fridge, microwave, washing machine, dryer, cradle, vacuum, and dishwasher) and installed a speaker and receiver inside. This setup allows each appliance to play sound independently, all controlled remotely through transmitters.
With speakers and receivers hidden inside, and each machine’s original power cable intact, the appliances look like everyday objects but act as audio channels, creating a mix of functionality and sound without any visible tech.
At the heart of the installation, there’s the refrigeratator. Inside, I’ve set up a B.Beat media player that acts as the main audio source, hooked up to five radio transmitters—both Alto Stealths and XVIVEs. From here, each appliance in the space is connected via its own receiver
creating a network where every machine has a specific part to play. One simple volume knob inside the fridge controls the entire setup, so it’s user-friendly despite the complexity behind the scenes.
