The Houdini (also known as the Irish goodbye), is a non-formal way to leave the function without saying anything at all. Sneaking out of the party sometimes is the most frictionless method of exit. Saying your actual goodbye often emphasizes that you don't want to be there, and you will often be faced with a lot of people saying "come on buddy, just one more". At the same time it is often seen as rude to just leave without notice.
